Oh Miami, the land of the truly beautiful. Here, you really are what you wear but unlike most other fashion capitals, fashion can ultimately be defined as personal. We’re always making a statement whether we are running errands on Lincoln Rd, or we’re in VIP at Ora, we are always dressed to impress. Fashion in Miami is like art, in the sense that it can not be defined in a cookie cutter sense of the word. People dress in different styles from hipster chic, to daring and captivating, and everything in between with every single person bringing their own sense of style to the table. Of course, we all know of some guidelines and fashion do’s and don’ts in Miami. I have never seen a girl get shot down faster by a bouncer than when she’s wearing jeans and flip flops, especially to places like Rockwell. Girl, you’re not in Kansas anymore.
Speaking of the club, let’s talk attire. We all know Miami is the Vegas of the east coast, and if you’re here for vacation, maybe you’re flip flops are all you thought to bring. It happens to the best of us! But as much as nightlife is a fundamental part of our culture here, that aspect goes hand in hand with fashion. Nightlife for women’s fashion usually means bold and brazen attire that really stands out. Every woman, no matter what body type, should feel like a supermodel when they go out! The styles are different from venue to venue; some places are more relaxed than others when it comes to how flashy you have to be to turn heads. Most natives will be able to tell you how to dress for certain clubs and events. For men, as with most things, it’s all so much simpler. The style here really is quite casual, not matter where you are. Of course button downs and slacks are appropriate for a good number of night activities, but remember, we’re not talking about a Hawaiian tee shirts that you wore on that Jimmy Buffet cruise. While men get off the hook easily in just about all of Miami, there are areas like Wynwood where both men and women can dress casually for most events so bring your hipster plaid shirt or bohemian skirt.
Now, let’s not forget the business side of fashion here in Miami: It fuels part of the local economy here. Miami hosts the largest swimwear show in the world! Much like a fashion week in New York and London, the swimwear show in Miami is a place where big name brands and fashion stars come together to decide what the newest fashion in swimsuits and beach attire will be for the next year. On top of Swim Show, Miami also has it’s own fashion week Funkshion, which also showcases swimwear and resort collections on a world-class platform. These collections highlight the high-end fashion and shopping in Miami, outlets and malls we covered in our Best Shopping in Miami blog like Bal Harbor and the Brickell City Center.
Miami has such a fun and fast paced cultural environment that is always evolving to fit the ever-changing trending world of fashion and nightlife. Social life and media have a lot to do with the way people are seen here. We’re not the only ones blogging about the culture of Miami. If you’re lucky enough, you may end up in a fashionista blog or Instagram post just by what you’re wearing. As materialistic as it sounds, in the heart of SoBe, you are what you wear, and what you wear should always be expressing you in the best way possible. If you’re more the Posh Spice to your Sporty Spice friend, then dress the part- but keep it in theme with whatever event you’re attending. The one thing you can say about Miami is that there is always something going on year round, whether it’s a music festival, art event or fashion show, there is always a reason to dress to impress.
